BIRTH: the story The year was 1969. THE PEDDLERS had concluded their long residency at THE PICKWICK CLUB. We were invited to perform at THE LONDON HILTON together with a host of British entertainers for a fund raiser to keep the Israeli conflict from running out of weapons. Such artistes included Tommy Cooper, Mike and Bernie Winters, Joe Loss and many more. Hosts of top London agents had gifted their artistes for this Gala occasion.
One act that appeared that evening was Tommy Cooper, who was working at the Dorchester Hotel, 30 paces up Park Lane from the venue. Tommy apologised for his lateness arriving. As he was setting up his props in the middle of the ballroom, countless pieces of The Dorchester's silver cutlery kept falling from his dinner suit, to hysterical laughter from the hundreds of extremely rich punters. The raffle tickets cost a 1000 quid each, the prize was a Ferrari.
At 2.30am it was all over and the compere announced that the sum total monies collected would keep the war going for approx 12 hours. I, for one, wondered what in God's name had I contributed to?
Arriving home at my flat in Shepherds Bush, I watched the CBS news on television and wrote a song that depicted the whole world as one family, sharing the birth of a new life, living in joy and peace together until a pointless war destroys the dream. My song describes the families' reaction to these events. Wars still go on throughout this planet, a sad fact that is and always will be the same. But have we learnt anything?
